Character-grade walnut is one of those woods that has a personality all its own. The knots, the swirling grain, the color variation from board to board - it's what makes it special. But when the finish starts to go, all of that character gets buried under dullness and wear. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this Sandy, UT home. Our goal here was simple - bring the wood back without erasing what made it great. We kept the original bevel edge intact. That detail matters more than people realize. The bevel is what gives each plank its own identity and keeps the floor from looking flat and generic. Sand it away and you lose something you can't get back. For the finish, we went with a smooth satin sheen. Not too glossy, not matte. Satin hits that sweet spot where the wood grain stays front and center and the light catches it just right without turning the floor into a mirror. It also holds up better over time in a high-traffic open-concept layout like this one. What we ended up with is a floor that feels completely fresh without losing an ounce of its original character. The rich walnut tones, the tight grain swirls, the subtle variation between lighter and darker planks - all of it is still there, just protected and polished. A proper refinish like this is one of the best investments you can make in a home with real hardwood. You get years of life added back into the wood at a fraction of what full replacement would cost.
